The IYC Cruisers Forum is here to foster fast, efficient communication between registered IYC cruisers regarding:
• Relevant and important nautical topics
• Updates and information on yacht clubs, marinas, anchorages, bridges, etc.
• Impromptu cruises run by members
• Maintenance issues and vendors
• Other categories to be determinedIt is absolutely NOT a place for politics, religion, jokes, profanity, disrespectful behavior, and the like. Forum moderators will not hesitate to remove posts that they deem inappropriate.
For the forum to be effective, most users will elect to sign up for email notifications whenever a post is made under a chosen topic. If someone needs a quick answer on some important question, this ensures that numerous cruisers will see the post without have to check the website periodically. If someone posts about an impromptu cruise, the email notifications get the word out fast. The downside is numerous email notifications to users.
Keeping the topics, posts, and replies concise and well-organized is always a challenge. The forum is not a chat room. An important example:
John Doe posts about an impromptu cruise they are running under the proper topic of “Impromptu Cruises”, tries to include all the relevant facts, and lists his email and maybe phone number. Sam can respond on the forum that he is interested and will contact the cruise “leader” via email, or simply skip posting and go directly to email/phone.
In the first case, other forum users see the interest level of the cruise. In the second case, there are fewer posts and email notifications. All the follow-on communications between John and Sam take place OFF the forum. It could be, however, that Sam’s questions make John realize that he needs to add more information to his post. He should then edit his post or create a new one with the extra info.
